Excel Letter To Number

Excel Letter To Number - I need to know how i can add letters to an existing column of numbers. I need to add the same two letters before each group of numbers. I have a cell with range name. Is anyone aware of a funtion to return 1 for a, 2 for b, etc? I want to have a reference (or index) so that i can print out where each parameter is. Hoping i could find some help: I need to convert a string of letters into numbers, and vice versa. The best way i've found to 'convert' a number into a column letter is : I was trying to get the ascii of the first letter of the country name. A common problem with vlookup is a mismatch between numbers and text.
